A sorta positive-negative project:

Here’s one from last weekend:

As I worked on this one, it didn’t quite resolve whether it wanted to be a flat abstract or a landscape-type space.

I’ve been slow this month and slower at posting, here’s what I was working on two weekends ago:

Messing around with mineral oil for several sessions with this and layering over it, lots of fun, fails to make something that looks finished – I’m still learning how this method could work for me.

The main oil pastels I like to use are Caran D’ache Neopastels. This day I was trying my smaller set of Sennelier oil pastels (those things have got affordability issues).  They have a really nice painty quality that makes me attracted to using them, the downside being that they are so soft they are hard to control, and use up rather quickly. They also don’t quite dry on their own, and spray fix got odd results for me. Perhaps this is so Sennelier can then sell you their special spray fix, which I haven’t tried yet.

Like oil paints, the different pigments have quite different qualities, some of the pastels are opaque and some very transparent. The set has a very dark yet transparent sap green. I love a good sap green. Still, hard to control.  It would be fun to try working large with these, but then I might use them up in one shot, and I definately can’t afford a new batch every picture!

More fun using mineral oil with oil pastels – this was originally one small piece but it wasn’t coming out, so I cut it into 2 smaller pieces and worked on them separately.
